Honeymoon in Vegas
Honeymoon in Vegas was released in 1992 and is a classic Nicolas Cage film with a great cast including: James Caan and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Jack and Betsy are in love, they are the perfect couple who seem to have everything going for them, that is except the fact that Jack is terrified of marriage. His mother made him promise never to get married and left him with a screwed up view on the whole thing. Betsy dreams of getting married and having kids as soon as possible, so after making her views clear she finally manages to get Jack to agree. The couple head to Vegas, where they plan to get married the next day, until Jack gets an unexpected invitation to a Poker game being held by one of the regulars at the casino. He gets a straight flush and in order to carry on with his winnings in the game he borrows money from big time gambler Tommy Korman blissfully unaware that Korman has rigged the entire poker game so that he loses $65,000. When the inevitable happens Tommy comes up with the suggestion that for one weekend with his girlfriend Betsy (Who just happens to look like his dead wife) he will wipe Jacks debt completely leaving him owing nothing. After talking to Betsy she agrees and heads off to spend a weekend with Tommy in Hawaii. Consumed with jealousy Jack then starts a mission to get Betsy back, doing everything he can to get back to her but underestimating how far Tommy will go to keep him away using any means possible.
This is by far one of the best gambling related movies I have seen. Nicolas Cage is fantastic as the hilariously messed up Jack Singer and he and Sarah Jessica Parker definitely have a great on screen chemistry in all their scenes together. James Caan gives a great performance as Tommy, a man obsessed by the death of his ex wife who just happens to look exactly like Betsy. The film has some great shots of in and around casinos in Vegas and really makes you want to go there and experience it for yourself. It shows brilliantly the atmosphere of the place and the highs and lows of gambling.
There is one particularly great scene in this movie in which Jack Singer resorts to skydiving from a plane dressed as Elvis to get back to the hotel in Vegas, this is a classic moment in the film and really adds to its funny and unique setup.
Honeymoon in Vegas also boasts a fantastic soundtrack and features tracks like Billy Joel’s take on ‘All shook up’ and Dwight Yoakam’s version of ‘Suspicious Minds’ great for fans of Elvis.
In short this film is one of those that although it was made a while ago, it has still managed to retain its original charm and watching it will make you rush out and book your tickets to Vegas, just try not to run up too many gambling debts while you’re there! Honeymoon in Vegas is a great fun filled romantic comedy that is well worth a watch.
