Maverick

Maverick is a light hearted fun filled Western/Comedy movie starring Mel Gibson as the charming yet witty Brett Maverick and Jodie Foster as the sultry seductress Annabelle.

The story is based on the popular television series, and Mel Gibson plays Bret Maverick, a funny, charming risk taking poker player who is trying to enter the southern All-Rivers Poker Tournament, where the winner is set to receive $500,000. The only problem is that Maverick does not yet even have the $25,000 entry fee to take part in the game which is only two days away. What takes place from there on in is a series of obstacles and plot twists which seem to be determined to stop him from taking part in the game, from people who owe Maverick money not paying up, to Alfred Molina who is making it his personal mission to keep him out of the tournament. Maverick finds himself fighting with the odds stacked against him to win the biggest game of his life.

Maverick is a truly great film; Mel Gibson gives a fantastic performance as the overly confident yet utterly hilarious Bret Maverick. There is also some brilliant and completely believable chemistry between him and Jodie Foster (Annabelle) as they exchange sarcastic insults and attempt to play each other at their own game. It is also worth noting that James Garner is equally excellent in his supporting role.  This mix of comedy, romance and western type cinematography really seems to work and the film is still popular with fans and critics now. If you are a fan of gambling movies or enjoy the odd poker game yourself then Maverick has enough action at the poker table to keep you interested whilst being backed up by a good solid entertaining storyline and a dose of old fashioned romance thrown in.

It is also worth mentioning that there is a cameo performance from Mel Gibson’s co star in the ‘Lethal Weapon’ films; Danny Glover these scenes are by far some of the funniest parts of the movie, especially for anyone who is a fan of those classic films. They even manage to squeeze in the classic line ‘I’m too old for this shit’ in the least obvious of places. Watch out for it, you will howl with laughter.

All in all Maverick is a star studded movie that will appeal to a wide array of fans due to its ability to cover so many different genres of film at once. From romance, comedy, gambling and fighting Maverick really does have it all and is definitely not one to be missed.
